The Gugan Gulwan Koori Leadership Group for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth between the ages of 12-15 years.

The program is holistic in design and provides opportunities for the young people to engage in learning leadership skills, participate in group activities and educational information sessions. Participants in this program develop a deeper understanding of relevant contemporary issues affecting them, the ability to self-advocate, and to improve their own personal development/identity in an environment that is safe, free from judgement and culturally sensitive.


The core objectives and outcomes of the Gugan Gulwan Koori Leadership program are:

  • Engagement of vulnerable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth;

  • Development and understanding of leadership skills/qualities;

  • Drug and Alcohol information sessions in an informal, non-threatening environment;

  • Mental Health information and support;

  • Promotion of healthy lifestyles and decision making;

  • Healthy relationship awareness;

  • Encourage and promote cultural practices and understanding;

  • Referrals and linkages;

  • Self-confidence/self-esteem/resilience;

  • Family and individual support.

The Gugan Gulwan Koori Leadership Group operates during school terms every Thursday from 4-6pm at the West Belconnen Child & Family Centre.
