The Gugan Gulwan Young Men’s Mentoring Group is a tailored targeted program for young men aged 8 – 12 years. The delivery of this program is to service an unmet need for support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men in the ACT region.  

As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men transition into adolescence they often face additional challenges. Young Men’s Mentoring Group provides strategies and support to help the young men identify and address issues within their own self-identity, family and community.

Program content:

  • Cultural awareness and practices

  • Living skills

  • Nutrition

  • Healthy relationship awareness

  • Identifying and building informal and formal support networks

  • Social/community inclusion

  • Self-confidence /self-esteem/resilience

The Gugan Gulwan Young Men’s Mentoring Group meets every Thursday from 4-6pm during the school term

Objectives:

The core objectives and outcomes of the Gugan Gulwan Young Men’s Mentoring Group are:

  • Engage young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men through group activities;

  • Identify and address key issues facing young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men aged 8-12yrs;

  • Build healthy, safe and sustainable social networks for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men;

  • Promotion of healthy lifestyles and decision making;

  • Encourage and promote cultural practices and understanding;

  • Provide a safe space for men’s business to be discussed.
