The Gugan Gulwan Young Mum’s Group (YMG) is a tailored program to meet the needs of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mother’s in the ACT region.

The program is holistic in design for mother, child and family. The program provides opportunities for the young mum’s to engage in the learning and development of life skills, group activities and educational information sessions. Participants in this program receive practical parental support, advice and information on issues affecting them. The program is delivered in an environment that is safe, free from judgement and culturally sensitive.

The Gugan Gulwan Young Mum’s Group meets every Tuesday 10am-2pm.

Objectives:

The core objectives and outcomes of the Gugan Gulwan Young Mum’s Group are:

 

  • Engage young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, aged 12-25yrs with children through group activities;

  • Identify and address key issues facing young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women aged 12-25yrs with children;

  • Facilitate information, skills development and understanding of early childhood;

  • Promotion of healthy lifestyles and decision making;

  • Build healthy, safe and sustainable social networks for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women;

  • Encourage and promote cultural practices and understanding;

  • Provide a safe space for women’s business to be discussed.
